NAMM 2015, Cuicani in Arizona, First drum cover

Cuicani recently had the opportunity to perform at NAMM, which is a convention for music instrument makers and musicians. It was amazing just to be there, try out new gear, make new friends, and run into old friends.

This past weekend, we went on our first tour together, a weekend trip to Tuscon and Phoenix. It was great to get out and play in front new crowds, meet new people, and see the sights. We were welcomed warmly, and we plan on playing out there again in April!

I also just posted my first drum cover video, of the song “Valerie” by Amy Winehouse. Please check it out and subscribe to my youtube channel.

Chuck D

Many things have been going on. I have been playing a lot with Quetzal, working on a new EP with Cuicani, and writing new music with Souliance, as well as playing gigs with other artists like Marisa Ronstadt. A very exciting thing that happened was that I got to back up the legendary Chuck D at an event for the National Day Laborers Organizing Network. Check out the video of his speech and the impromptu freestyle he did. It was nice that at the end, he turns to me and says, “You’re very funky.”

Quetzal at Grand Performances

I had an amazing time playing with Quetzal at their 20 year anniversary show at Grand Performances in downtown Los Angeles. It was an honor and a privilege to perform with the Grammy-winning band. It was also nice to be reunited with La Santa Cecilia, who came and did a few songs, along with many other special guests, including Dengue Fever, East LA Taiko, Maya Jupiter, and several past members of Quetzal.

Cuicani Studio Session

This past Thursday, my band Cuicani went into the studio to record five new songs. Our last EP was focused on the Latin Reggae genre, but these new songs vary from soul to Peruvian waltz and doo wop sounds. It has been very exciting and challenging for me to be a part of something new and original.

Please check the events and photos pages as I have been updating them with the latest. Thanks for stopping by!

New Music/Website/EP

A few months ago I went into the studio with my long-time collaborators pianist Reggy Woods and bassist Alex Bendana. We recorded several of Reggy’s original tunes as well as some standard jazz tunes, with our own twist. You can hear our version of Wayne Shorter’s “Fall,” Radiohead’s “Pakt Like Sardines,” and more at Reggy’s reverbnation page.

Also, Cuicani is very close to releasing our first 5-song EP. We have a brand new website up where you can get a taste of what is to come.

I have several gigs coming up in the next few weeks so please be sure to check the events page and come out and say hi sometime!

Chicanas Who Rock

I’m finally getting around to updating this blog! I have a couple of gigs coming up this weekend, so please check the “events” page for more info.

At the end of January, I had the opportunity to drum in an all-female band backing up legendary East L.A. musicians Alice Bag, Teresa Covarubbias from the Brat, and Martha Gonzalez from the band Quetzal. The concert was called “Chicanas who Rock,” and it was part of the Smithsonian Institute exhibit at Cal State L.A. called “Latinos in U.S. Popular Music.” It was very inspiring for me to work with strong, successful female musicians who made their mark in Los Angeles. Videos and photos can be found at http://enclavelosangeles.com/2014/01/25/chicanas-who-rock-and-more-american-sabor-at-csula/.
Here is a video of one of Alice Bag’s songs that we performed called “Get Out”

Music Video/EP release

At the end of this month, Souliance will be filming our first music video for our song “Tell Me.” I will of course be sharing that as soon as it is completed!

Cuicani will be releasing our first EP in December. We will have a one-year anniversary/EP release on December 21, so stay tuned for that. We also have a show at East LA rep on November 15. In the meantime, please enjoy the new videos I posted on the “Videos” page.
